Aditya Aggatrio, an expatriate working as General Manager for Agrimal Ltd, was slaughtered at his house between 8-9 pm on the night of Friday 20th November.
Though the details are sketchy, there are strong indications that the grisly crime was committed by servants working as a Cook and a Guard in search of quick money.
Apparently, the deceased was due to return home and had managed to obtain a travel allowance from the Bank for the purpose. The murder therefore appears to have been committed for the foreign exchange that was temporarily available in house.
Though the Police report that the deceased was alone in the house, there are unconfirmed rumours that his daughter was also in the house at the time, but this has yet to be verified.
Suffice to say, this incident is sending shock waves through the expatriate community as well as foreign investors.
We have heard that the US Embassy has issued security warnings to all US Citizens in Malawi - and there is a growing sense of unease at the rapid increase in violent crime as well as the apparent Police inadequacy to cope with the surge.
Malawi is fast losing its reputation as a 'safe haven' and is in danger of being compared with South Africa for the inordinately high rate of crime - per capita.
